NIGERIA TO HOST THE 2013 SEVENTH ANNUAL PAN COMMONWEALTH
FORUM ON OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNING (PCF7) TO BE HELD AT
NOUN, ABUJA OFFICE, NIGERIA.
The plan for the forthcoming Seventh Pan Commonwealth Conference on Open and
Distance Learning (PCF7) coming up in December (2-7), 2013 is now in top gear.
The Local Organizing Committee chaired by Professor Mba O. Okoronkwo, OON will be
receiving a team from the Commonwealth of Learning on November 5&6 at NOUN, Abuja
Office. The team is coming to assess the extent of readiness of the LOC with a
view to assisting with suggestions and materials to ensure success. This is the first time
Nigeria is hosting the Pan Commonwealth Conference which involves all the 54 nations of
the Commonwealth. We cannot afford to fail the nation.

Sir, Professor Mba Okoronkwo, OON's lecture topic delivered at Medic West
Africa Medical and Diagnostic Conference held at Eko Hotel, Lagos, October
16-18, 2012:
" PUBLIC HEALTH CHALLENGES OF PARASITIC INFECTIONS :
MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTIC INTERVENTIONS".
Professor Okoronkwo's first paragraph of his lecture highlights the urgency of public
health issue of intestinal parasites and other parasites as a global issue that needs to be
addressed. He states in part:
" Parasitic infections is considered to be a public health challenge of global importance.
They affect an estimated 3.5 billion persons. and cause clinical morbidity in
approximately 450 million (WHO 2000). The amount of harm caused by parasite
infections to the health and welfare of individuals and communities depends on :
a. The parasite species;
;b. The intensity and cause of the infection;
c. The nature of the infection between the parasite species and concurrent infections;
d. The nutritional and immunological status of the population, and
e. Numerous socioeconomic factors.
All the five factors above may be modulated by seasonal and climatic factors\
(WHO Expert Committee on Prevention and Control of Intestinal Parasite
Infections.1986) "

The hospital Management Board is seeking applications from qualified
health care personnel in the following fields of expertise: clinician.
sugeon. pharmacist. paediatrist. gynecologist medical scientist. Other

This 12 bed hospital was single handedly built and donated to Methodist Church Nigeria
by Sir, Chief, Ndukwe Osogho Ajala , OON, an industral chemist and a philanthropist in
2002. Chief Ajala is the son of Chief Osogho Ajala a decorated elder with chieftaincy
title and a ddressed as Chief Osgho Ajala, Ogechi 1 of Item. In recent years the hospital
has received a wide community help from tfrom the Association of Rural Surgical
Practitioners of Nigeria, area churches, and community groups including Owan
Professionals Foundation whose chairman, Sir, Professor Mba Ogbureke
Okkoronkwo, OON., Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, National
Open University of Nigeria who was able to get support from the
medical community for volunteer medical services. Volunteer surgeons,
eye doctors , and other health care personnel. volunteered their services for
numerous hours and days to many lives in the community.
TERSTIMONY OF ACUTE NEED OF MEDICAL
PRACTITIONERS:
: The photo below shows patients who travelled fromgreat distances
from around the neighboring towns lined up for an opportunity to
receive eye treatment during the recent visit of Pro Bono eye doctors
and specialists at the hospital court yard in Apuanu Item a few month
ago. Over 750 patients came and took their positions in line. Only
few, about 250 patients eceived treatment. Great many were turned
away, as there were only few medical specialista available then.
Now Chijioke Osogho Memorial Methodist Hospital Management
Board strives to meet the challenge by expanding the facility and
increase the hospital personnel to meet the need.of communities
whose residents must come to the hospital for emergency health
needs, including:

an academic delegation of NOUN experts to Open
Universities of Sudan and Dubai
Professor Mba Ogbureke Okoronkwo, OON, scheduled to lead a team of Council Sub Committee Members at NOUN to Open Universities of Sudan and Dubai to look at the academic structure of these sister universities. "They may serve as a template" for NOUN. Professor Okoronkwo and team will first visit Sudan, then Dubai, Sunday 26 through September 2, 2012, the date of their departure. Conference of the International Council for Distance Education (ICDE). He is the Chairman of the Local
Organizing Committee of the Seventh Pan-Commonwealth Conference on Distance Learning (PCF7
, which Nigeria is co-hosting with the Commonwealth of Learning. "The National Open University of Nigeria
is the key driver to the conference, while the Federal Ministry of Education is the Chief Host."

Professor Mba Ogbureke Okoronkwo, OON, who was recently appointed the Editor-In-Chief of the
Journal of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria has been registered for a Workshop
on "Management Skills for Environmental Health and Safety Professionals", holding at Harvard
University School of Public Health, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A 26-28 March, 2012.
Professor Okoronkwo's other March 2012 academic schedule is a Guest Lecturer at Annual
Public Health Lecture and Special General Meeting of the Association of Medical Laboratory
Sciences, which he is alsoattending as it's Editor-In-Chief. This event will be held at Ondo State University
